Historic Concert in North Korea

In one of the most secretive societies in the world, the New York Philharmonic became the first American cultural group to perform in North Korea on Tuesday. A group of 105 musicians and an American press corps made the journey to the capital, Pyongyang. Tuesday's program was televised in North and South Korea, and around the world. Only the North Korean elite attended the concert; however, the North Korean people were also able to watch the program on TV, a break from the 2 channel propoganda they normally get. The leader, Kim Jong-il, was not present at the concert.

I'm really glad that this event came to fruition. Music was a fantastic way to break the ice between North Korea and the US. I believe music is an incredible way to bring peace and harmony if only for a moment in a world that has its atrocities.

Here is a clip of the NY Philharmonic performing, "Arirang," the most popular and best-known traditional Korean folk song. The song is considered as a sort of anthem for a reunified Korea and is usually played before friendly events between the two sides.

*UPDATED* North Korea has officially invited rock guitarist Eric Clapton to play a concert in Pyongyang next year. This is the first time a Western rock star has been invited to the communist state. Eric hasn't made a decision, but it has piqued his interest. It is reported, the leader, Kim Jong-il is a Clapton fan. I think it would be great to see Eric Clapton live in Pyongyang.

Colbie Caillat

I first listened to her song, "Bubbly," on the radio and totally dug it. I then listend to the rest of her album, "CoCo," and enjoyed it all. It's a pretty soothing, chill at the beach kind of album. I love her voice and her music is well written and crafted. According to Wikipedia, Colbie is noted for her MySpace profile which led her to become the number-one unsigned singer in her genre for 4 months. She then signed with a label, Universal Republic, that allowed her total creative freedom to write her own music. Colbie hails from Malibu, California.

This is one of her songs called "Realize" from her album, "CoCo."

This is what you get when you combine footage from Jean-Claude Van Damme's movie, "Bloodsport" and Mentos. This Mentos commerical spoof cracks me up everytime. Pretty amazing to see how far Forest Whitaker's career has evolved from "Bloodsport" to winning an Oscar as Best Actor in "The Last King of Scotland" last year.
